Das Kawai MS-710/720
The Kawai MS-710/720, top model of the MS series, fascinates with its vast range of features and rather hi-class sound. Next to the usual preset sounds, it boasts a simple 2 wave synthesizer with 32 wave loops taken from the 'professional' K series. It also has Kawai's patented 'Ad-Lib' function on board: according to tone and style of the chosen auto accompaniment, 17 preset sequences can be played in the selected preset sound. The 19 drum sounds can be played individually in the 'custom mode', but it isn't possible to save your own patterns. On the other hand, you can freely assign sounds to 4 pads.
When modifying, I came across several interesting possibilities for manipulating the memory. These, however, result in a hang-up in some situations and therefore require a soft reset button. The 'drum chrusher' transforms the otherwise sweet and trancey loops and beats into interesting industrial patterns, especially in combination with the 'freeze' switches. Up to now, I have modified as follows:
- 4-switch matrix for manipulating the auto accompaniment
- 2 freeze switches for the auto accompaniment
- 'Drum chrusher'-switch
- Soft reset button
